The cause of that message is...,

your default locale setting of the user xyz, who is running, starting or
stoping the MV server has the german locale setting. That means, you get
a message "Unterbrechung waehrend des Betreibssystemaufrufs" instead of
"Interrupted system calls" (from my head). If there are some interrupted
system calls like stop or restart, MV get the signal and test it for the
string "Interrupted" (  if ($! =~ m/^Interrupted/) {  ... ), but MV get
"Unterbrechung...". Therefore, you get a "Died in select...." message.

Solution:
Change your locale back to en_US for the user, who is working with MV.
Please, search for "Unterbrechung..." in the old MV Archives. There is a
solution.
