[ic] Urgent Help Needed

Dear Distraught Dane,
1) Never fear (on setting up Linux, at least). This is now nearly idiot
proof. I have experience with 3 distros, RedHat, SuSE and Caldera and all
install nearly flawlessly, now-a-days. Wasn't always that way but a lot has
changed in a decade.

With that said, however, it depends on how many server applications you are
trying to install for that to be true. A server is a lot different than a
personal workstation. If you don't know that as of yet, you soon will.
But don't delay. Gather a bit more info (probably from another list like a
FLUX.ORG or one of the many Linux sites--this is a RHL Interchange Server
list) and pull the trigger right away. Lately I've found SuSE intriquing,
but I'm still working on getting a POP service going (after a couple of
weeks) and I kind of know what I'm doing. And if you want tried and proven,
I don't think you can argue with RHL's 75%+? market share. They must be
doing something right to command that huge of a market presence and the RHL
distro has earned the right to be #1.

2) If you HAVE to have IC installed right away, then I'd plan to pay a fee
to someone that knows how to do it and just accept the fact that we don't
learn the good stuff in a weekend. I have 20 years experience in the IT
field, 15 or so of those doing some programming, though not full-time, and
after nearly three weeks of attempts, I'm still hoping to have the
Foundation Demo Store working by April 15. There are some things in the
way--like having to get Perl working correctly (with lots of required
software bundles), understanding more about CGI-BIN and how that works, some
C++, installing a sercure CERT, mySQL, a mySQL administration program, and
tightening up my firewall to prevent another defacement. All fun stuff but
it takes time, especially the later, which if you are running a server that
is 24/7 on the net, is CRITICAL!

Much of this is rather simple-- right up to the point when you get an error.
Then you're sunk because you don't have a clue on whether the fix is simple
or highly complex. And, unfortunately, I have to squeeze this in between
clients that have needs for support of 3-GL programs, and a life. What I'm
saying is that if you have to have it up and running real quick, you may
have to bite the bullet and purchase a pre-configured system, but it's only
money... someone else can point you where to go for a preconfigured system.

And, in case you can't tell, that service is NOT provided by me. Give me 6
months and then ask the question again... :-) In the meantime, don't worry
about this person being near LV. What you need is someone good, reasonably
priced, and they could be anywhere on the planet, IMO.

Good Luck!
