[ic] help - i lost the components

hello list,
i'm a newbie with interchange. i want to build a shop based on the
foundation-shop.

maybe an easy question for me a big problem.
i tried to change the background-color of the menu and catalog bar. because
i found no possibility to make these changes with the administration tool, i
changed the variables CATEGORYBAR_BG, CATEGORYBAR_LINK, CATEGORYBAR_TEXT and
MENUBAR_BG in the file theme.cfg, that i down- and uploaded by ftp (as user
interch).
after i did this, i only could see the welcome-message from the index.html
whitout all bars.
after uploading with ftp i saw, that the file-attributes were changed, so i
set them with chmod to u:rwx, go:rx (is this right?)
and restarted the shop new but unfortunately the situation was the same as
before.
also there are no components on all sites, when i look at the sites in the
administration tool.

please, i need urgent help in this case.
when i load up the origin file with ftp, nothing changes.

by the way: can i change the display of the categories (i have to many
categories, that i can show them all). i want to make it in this way: when i
click to the product-group, the categories should show up below the
product-group as links. is it possible to make more then one level of
categorie (that means, i want to have sub-categories)?
