I have lost track of this thread but this tutorial helped me:

It creates two users 'sam' (the catalog user) and 'interch'(the interchange user). 'sam' owns the catalogs and they are created in its home directory. Interchange runs as 'interch' and is a member of the 'sam' group. Interchange is given permission to access the catalogs by changing the permissions on the catalogs directory to give it group access as well (ie. 770). 

On thing that I had to change when running 'bin/makecat' was to set the path to the mysql utilities (ie. put '/usr/local/mysql/bin' in my path).

When you find what was wrong, can you post it.
