I've been having this problem too and just realized this morning that it was
related to my using Netscape 6.2 as my browsers. I was getting a similar error
when trying to modify the layout of the item list display in the Admin UI and
my changes wouldn't stay. Tried it in IE 6 and it worked fine. Upgraded to
Netscape 7.1 and it works fine there too.
