Note that Gentoo builds a proper Perl by default.  You have to be
specific if you want a non-standard Perl build (threads etc.):

This is from the perl.ebuild file:

	ewarn ""
	ewarn "PLEASE NOTE: If you want to compile perl-5.8 with"
