There are a couple of reasons i can think of....

* <a href="[area sku123]" class="itemlink">some link text besides "click
here" :)</a>.
* Since [/page] is discouraged, using [page] leaves what looks to the
untrained eye like extraneous
  </a>s.  

Since [page foo] and <a href="[area foo]"> end up the same anyway,
though...it's mostly personal preference.
