no initial price on basket...

Hi all, I must have broke something somewhere, but durned if I can find it...

New catalog - but we have built others that work OK.  Don't see anything 
in catalog.cfg that's diferent for this one.

Ordering something displays the basket.html page, but the price is -0-.  
Doing a "recalculate" causes the correct prices to appear, even size 
adjustments for XXL t-shirts and everything.

Order something else, and the same thing happens: basket shows -0- for 
the second item, but a "recalculate" brings up the right price.

How come it's not showing up on the first display?  What is different 
about recalc's price calc routine - how can it find it when the initial 
basket display cannot?
