Installation Error

This is my first effort to get Minivend running and I have a question.
 I have not been able to find the cause of this error message in the
documentation. Any help would be appreciated.
System: Linux Dist. Debian Slink SMP i586
kernel: Version 2.2
Perl ver. 5.00404

I have installed the miniVend Server and build the simple catalog no
problem until the script tries to start the server or if I try to
restart it. I get this message.

I do not know how to proceed from here.
If I try the catalog access command
"http://www.myserver.com/simple"
the index page of the demo catalog opens OK.
If I try to go to one of the items the message is returned after approx
60sec. that the server is busy , or not working, try back later.
Thanks in advance and I hope that this endeavor will be met with the
level of assistance the I have thus far experienced in the Linux
community.
