Re: Minivend vs Others Options

Dear Mr. Zachary Buckholz,

Great to hear that!  Very encouraging news.  I will have to convince the investors of this and will reference your claim as well as others.

May I ask about your indexing strategy for such a large MySQL database.  I understand that is the key to quick search times.

Also many minivenders will find this information of use as more and more minivend sites turn to MySQL for db support.

Thank you,

Just a little tidbit about mySQL. We use it for Radius data, I am the system / network admin for the nations 5th largest backbone provider and we currently have about 2 million records in our accounting database which is mysql driven. Works great. Has nothing to do with minivend but mysql can handle more then the docs say it can.

Mike,

I have done some pretty simple carts using minivend on a virtual server and have had little to no problems.  I have a very big client wanting a database driven e-commerce site that they wish to take PUBLIC.  They are selling information that before the Internet could not have been disseminate in this fashion.  I thought I would use MySQL and minivend.  But I could do it (with allot more work of course) in PHP3 and MySQL.  My question to you is (you being the expert) should I gamble (only a gamble because I haven't done this size site before) such a big job on Minivend and MySQL.  They will have thousands of products in the database.  One of the deep pockets keeps seeing Oracle commercials and so he wants that.  I don't do Oracle, yet.  The machine will have Linux 6.0, latest Apache/PHP3/MySQL, Single PII450, Asus P2B98-S, 256 Mb PC100 RAM, Enlight Raid w/ 6 4.5Gig SCSI drives.  Any input from anyone would be great!

Also does anyone know of any BIG Name MySQL implementations that I can show these investors.  I went to the MySQL page and was not impressed with their showoffs.  One URL they display as an example is YAHOOSUCK.COM.  Not something I want my investors to see.  If you know what I mean.

Thanks,

George Knerr
