Actually, it has a value of 'NULL', which is being counted as a value.
Or is there a way to tell minivend to treat NULL as 0?  So what I'm
really checking is

   [if scratch image ne "NULL"]

although I hadn't fully realized it yet when I wrote my message.  :)

Unfortunately, I'm working from a database that already existed for 
other applications, so I can't go in and change things.
