Cory,
Thanks for replying -- but then
[item-field category] works for the products database -- not for the 
arbitrary database group.asc that I'm using -- and yes I even tried that 
ra="yes" flag in the [area scan ...] -- what that does is returns all 
categories in the group.asc and not the ones corresponding to my search 
criteria [sf=grp se=electronics...]

Anyway -- thanks again --

For those who are listening -- I'm still stuck on this one. Please throw 
some light))
