[mv] Minivend's HTML

****** message to minivend-users from John Carroll <jjc@groveton.com> ******

I just started fiddling with MiniVend last week, so maybe everybody knows
this, but in case they don't, it's full of less than perfect html, both in
the docs and in the pages it generates.

In the last couple of days I've been poking around MiniVend 3.14-4
trying to figure out how it works. Making progress, I think, but I keep
finding html errors. For fun I just ran the html-tidy utility on
"minivend.html" and came up with something over 1500 warnings. That
document got off to a rocky start:

<HTML><HEAD>
<CENTER><TITLE>minivend</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR=WHITE></CENTER>

Netscape didn't seem to care, but that's pretty awful code. The rest of
the warnings were almost all for empty <p> tags, but there were a few for
things like missing missing semicolons and mixups with list tags. I had
"tidy" clean it up and pronounce it valid html 3.2. If I put a small
table with a "summary" in it around a paragraph, it could presumably
convince the W3C validator that it was html 4.0 transitional. And yes,
the cleaned up version looked just like the original in my browser.
The glitches I found in the pages Minivend generated for me were worse,
though the browser forgave those errors, too.

Not a big deal, I guess, but easy to fix. I still don't know the MV tags
well enough to safely clean up the templates, or whatever they're called,
but it shouldn't be a big job. Will give it a shot if I ever get to
understand the system.
