[mv] Problem: Minimate, .access, and .access_gate

Hello.
I searched the archive, but didn't see a solution to my problem.

I having a problem with the access control part of MiniMate. I followed the 
directions on http://www.linuxia.net/minimate/#security. When I only turn on 
the Apache security part with <LocationMatch>...</LocationMatch>, everything 
works fine. But when I create .access (empty) and .access_gate, I cannot 
access the databases. The main MiniMate page(menu.html) comes up fine , but 
when I try to access the database, this is what I get in the error.log:

Also, I noticed in the error.log file that with or without the .access and 
.access_gate files, I see the following message after I type in the userid 
and password:

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Also, it seems to me that I 
don't need .access/.access_gate if <LocationMatch>...</LocationMatch> is 
working. Could someone tell me why I need .access/.access_gate?
