Just wanted to thank Julie, Joachim, and Param for their responses and to
pass along what I finally did to make the new field work.  Tried 
re-starting the store, and that didn't do it.  Being by then out of
sane ideas, I just typed "makecat simple" and remade the store.  Didn't
change any of the .asc files, and lo and behold, the new field worked!  I
guess if I'd heard from Param first, I'd have gotten the same result with
reconfig.
