Thanks, Joachim, these are the most obvious things, and I had checked them 
already.  Since I have been using minivend I have looked at other people's 
demo installs and seen broken usertags periodically, both versions 3.1x and 
4.0x, and the catalogs had not been edited in any way.  Could the sever 
configuration, or my user permissions, or file permissions contribute to 
this condition?
