We do something simular. We have the customer save their excel 
spreadsheet as text. then using a webbased upload script they send it 
to the server, once uploading is complete it converts it to the 
format we need and also produces unique codes we use for searches, 
then backs up the OLD products.asc and then replaces it with the new 
one.

Im sure the same thing could be done with quickbooks.
