case was to chown all the tlink and vlink files to the "minivend" and
"mvusers" and _not_ belongs to "steve" or any other members of the "mvusers"
group. What i mean is, chown all minivend files in cgi-bin directory to the
username and usergroup of the minivend program. <<

Yes, I've done this. The first thing I did was to verify that the default
installed configuration (which I gather addresses permission issues more
fully than before) wasn't working. The second thing I did was to set all the
appropriate file permissions to minivend:mvusers (cgi-bin/simple, config
files, socket after server start-up). The catalog belongs to steve:mvusers.
Clearly I have a mismatch in satisfying socket... and probably I'm being
spectacularly stupid. (Being a bit of a Unix newbie doesn't help - 1 year
in...)

The bit I'm probably not getting is which user is writing to socket. Setting
the suid bit doesn't solve it; I currently think it should, and perhaps
would if the drive wasn't nosuid (failed to find a definition for this, the
OBSD man isn't up to date). Back to the Apache book - I didn't fully
understand suEXEC, and I guess I may need to.

A thought: I'm aware of the discussion about documentation (and as a
designer myself, I sympathise very much with Mike). I document my syadmin
procedures so that I can repeat them exactly weeks/months later :) - I have
a couple of servers to maintain, and one is on a backbone up in London - I
want to get it right on my own server here before messing on the backbone.
So - would a step-by-step guide to a newbie's adventures in MiniVendLand be
of interest to anyone other than me?

Thanks for your input,

Steve
