This was the last variation of the [tag] attempts before I turned to a usertag.

[set logtime interpolate=1][tag time]%A, %B %d, %Y[/tag][/set]
[tag log log/access.log]
[scratch logtime] login: [value mv_username]
[/tag]

Please note that I was in error during my initial post, this is for a 3.14-5 MV system, not my 4.04
test system as originally stated.  Perhaps that is why your original syntax returned nothing.
