I haven't followed this thread too carefully, but if you want an order
number earlier than checkout, why not just put the following at a
strategic point in you code:

[if scratch myordernumber]
[set name=myordernumber interpolate=1][fcounter 'etc/order.number'][/set]
[/if]

and then change the receipt/report pages to use [scratch myordernumber]
instead of the usuall counter. If they don't checkout you will have
skipped numbers, but it will create an order number to use throughout the
session.
