So start over! Install a clean demo catalog, get it running, then convert
it to the catalog you need: edit the site variables and other stuff in
catalog.cfg, copy the pages and databases over, etc. If you must have the
same catalog name as before, post a "down for maintenance" page for an hour
while you do the rebuild, or you can try and get fancy with some symbolic
links.

Drastic? not really, its all bits, it is just a matter of bossing some
files around. If it worked before, it can work again - most of your effort
went into MV pages, graphics, data - there's nothing wrong with those
things (I assume from your posts). The important thing is to constantly
test as you change things over, and always have a back-up in case you need
to "undo" some change. If you are sure you can't find the answer in error
logs, server messages, etc, then go for it, the site isn't running now anyway!
