[mv] mv 3.14 discounts/common adjust tricky pricing scheme

Hello,
 
Does anyone have any specific examples of how to setup this pricing
scheme?
 
On a certain category of products, discount based on quantity.
By quantity i mean total quantity of products from this category.
 
i.e. selling nails and screws.
if a basket contains:
 
1 qty 1" screw
3 qty 2" nails
1 qty 1" nail
 
then the discount would only apply to the 3 qty 2" nails and the 1 qty 1"
nail.
 
The pricing scheme needs to come out to this:
 
quantity        price each
1-2                11.96
3-9               10.00
10+                9.50
 
There was a suggestion to use "common adjust" but that doesn't seem to
support what i'm asking.
i've tried using embedded perl and the [discount] tag, to no avail.
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
