I'm sure that this is not your problem, but we use Roxen as our HTTP server and in the
early days of setting up our first MV site, Roxen defaulted to a 1031 bit CSR key.
When Thawte issued the cert., Netscape was fat and happy, but IE couldn't process the
cert, it would simply hang.  I ended up needing to buy another at 1024 bits which
allowed both Netscape and Microslouth Internet Exploder to work.

No bias intended ;-)
