[mv] MySQL vs. PostgreSQL vs. Oracle as backend for Minivend...
****** message to minivend-users from "Webb, Malcolm" <malcolmw@upshot.com> ******
Hello-
I've installed Minivend, and have been very impressed so far. I have one
big question, though...
What are the tradeoffs of using MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle as a backend DB
for minivend?
I am very familiar with Oracle, and though it is a great product, I am
hoping to choose an open source solution. From looking at the propaganda
posted on the MySQL and PostgreSQL sites (neither company is being
completely straightforward) it looks as though a good generalization would
be that MySQL is faster, but PostgreSQL has more higher-end features such as
row-level locking, foreign keys, stored procedures, transactions, etc.
Can anyone who has used both offer some insight? I am particularly
interested in finding out:
Just HOW MUCH SLOWER is Postgres, and how does its speed compare to Oracle?
(I know that MySQL has posted benchmarks on its site, but I would prefer
some feedback from real users)
HOW NECESSARY ARE THE HIGHER-END FEATURES in Minivend (I am thinking mainly
about the incrementing and decrementing of inventory here - has anyone had
problems using MySQL to display/manage product availability within minivend?
What about cc auth/order completion?)
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
