All of the following apply to my situation.

However, your suggestion of using <A HREF="[area href=order arg=item-code
secure=1]"> Order Now </A> to order items did not work (I'm assuming that I
use it in my results.html etc. to add items to the basket). I've also added
"AlwaysSecure   ord/checkout multi/checkout ord/basket" in the catalog.cfg
file, but the secure basket is always empty. What's so weird is that it was
working until yesterday afternoon...
