First, when I was testing your site, the initial response wasn't a couple seconds, but more
like 30 after DNS resolution.  Once at the site, pages appears within 1-3 seconds and I'm
running on a 256k DSL.  I'd focus on why the initial page sucks so much gas...

Now, as for file structures, your not using flat files, when you mean ascii, you're
actually running gdbm, right?
