Yea, I haven't tried this in 4.x (which may not make a difference anyway...)
but it has been a while since I've built this particular system.  I would
really like to get a look at your version's docs, but the mv site is down (and
developer.akopia.net as well, where minivend.com re-directs.)

You could try putting it in "s or 

setting it to a scratch variable, or 

maybe try the  [value name="my_scan" set="[value mv_searchspec]"]  tag?

anyway, when the docs come back up....
