Unexpected by whom? Not by me. When I do the same thing over again, I try
not to expect different results. 8-)
This is not doing the same thing over again. First time, I pressed a button
that said "Buy this." Second time, I'm refreshing the shopping cart screen.
And as I noticed, and others have also pointed out, if you arrive at the
shopping cart screen using a different method, the behavior doesn't happen.
So when I do the same thing (refresh) over again, it gives me different
results! :-)
If you have buttons, and you use a POST, Netscape will even warn you and
say something like "Repost form?". Back when MSIE 3.0 was reposting the form
when you clicked BACK, I will agree there was a problem. But they realized
finally that that was truly unexpected behavior and stopped it.
Yes, I did mention that browsers ask you before you are reposting a form.
And I also pointed out that they are unable to warn you in the present case,
because you only clicked a button-you're not posting a form. (Hmmm, I guess
using a POST might be a solution-a partial one, because Refresh would still
give those "different results," but still an improvement.)
Again, it's not a show-stopper problem (unless you're the user who
encountered it, and didn't notice). I admit I tend to pay a good deal of
attention to usability issues; it's a special interest of mine, and
increasingly important on the web. In order to "idiot-proof" things, I
often try to think like an idiot, you might say. :-)
I wanted to let anyone know about it who's interested, and make a case for
fixing it, and let people brainstorm, and I have. If prevention is fairly
easy, it only seems reasonable to do it-or at least put it on the list.
Anyway, thanks for listening and responding.
