how should a beginner start?

I am an experienced web developer and have been building small professional
static web-sites for years.  When I say static, I mean no ASP, or SQL driven
stuff web-pages.  I do plenty with CGI including some limited delimited
database work.  I am not a programmer, but have a basic understanding of the
C language and have successfully "cut & pasted" PERL scripts on many
occasions.

Here's my question:
What is the best way for me to learn to implement Minivend and MySQL?
Books?  Classes?  Hire a tutor?  Just go for it?  All of the above?  Am I
better off just hiring a sub to do this stuff for me (knowing that I am a
better salesman than a programmer)?
