Yes, negative prices do work (as of 4.03).  We use them for "Free
Saturday shipping" or "Free this or that" promotions.  You will 
probably want some sort of logic to control how they show up 
(or don't).  We use a "status" field in all our catalogs, -1 
error/delete, 0 suspend/hide, 1 active.

A negative item is not at all the same as a "discount" in usual sense.
