[ic] Link template question

Me again (I just can't stop posting today).

I'm messing around with the Design / Layout Editor in the Admin UI and
thought it would be cool to add JavaScript rollover buttons to my Product
Groups by choosing image display type and the link template.  I checked
The documentation to see how one would do this and was dismayed to read
under the area database info:

5.7.17. link_template

Overrides the usual HTML link template for navbar entries. See the bar_link
subroutine in the /dist/catalog_before.cfg configuration file if you need to
modify link templates.

The foundation catalog navigation bars are not set up with link types that
use the link_template field.

However the cat database info states:

5.9.17. link_template

Overrides the usual HTML link template for navbar entries. See the bar_link
subroutine in the /dist/catalog_before.cfg configuration file if you need to
modify link templates.

There is no warning about the foundation type catalog not being able to use
the link template in the categories.

So can I or can I not create a custom template with some JavaScript code
that will make me some nice rollover buttons for each Product Group and
Category in a foundation type catalog?  And what would I have to add to the
bar_link subroutine in the catalog_before.cfg?  This would be really neat if
I could do this.  A little sample of a link template would be cool too! BTW,
I have the Product Groups and Categories all linking to Interchange pages.
