Thanks for the comments, all.  Unfortunately, we've already tried the rpc
fix which I found documented elsewhere in the lists.  This actually
introduced worse problems, so I reverted to 'low'.  Since my original post,
I have changed the gpg settings in Order.pm to include --no-secmem-warning,
after noting that one of the order related '.out' files that IC writes to
the scratch directory included the GPG insecure memory warning text.
Suppressing this warning has in fact seemed to have improved things.  We
have processed a number of orders since without any GPG trouble.

If this is the fix, I'd be interested to hear any theories on why we could
go for so long without any problems and then suddenly have it appear...?
