[ic] menu and categories

Hi list:

Can someone tell me how the menu/tree_selector work in the foundation 
store of IC 5.3? I do not quite understand the database design of it as 
I do not see any category table. I do only see the categories in the 
products table. Does the menu/tree_selector collect the category 
information from the products table?

Any hint will be appreciated.
