Your right it can be a pain in the vend. :-)
I thought the shipping criteria had to be a valid database field like
price or weight. I replaced price with [total noformat=1] and shipping
returns 0. The error log has this to say about it:

hgdev /cgi-bin/hgdev/process Custom shipping field '[total' doesn't
exist. Returning 0
My catalog.cfg related directives are: CustomShipping yes, and
DefaultShipping upsg. For kicks and grins I tried [total-cost
noformat=1] for price. Big mistake serious Hammerlock situation:-( The
final thing I attempted was price [total noformat=1] in the same field
in shipping.asc. With this shipping cost is returned but it is not based
on total after discounts and taxes.
I'm re-reading the docs on the subject, but would appreciate any
further assistance.
