I need some real basic help here on page designs....I'm stumped

Hello!

I am a real new user at MiniVend. I am an independent web designer and
I'm trying to set up the MiniVend catalog design for a customer. Their
ISP has installed the program and made sure it is running. It is my job
to change the look and put up the categories in the left hand side of
the pages. 

Here's the question:

HOW do I do this? I read the documentation, and it seems to be written
from the ISP point of view. I am not in the ISP business, although I
understand some of it.

I tried modifying the "leftside" file that comes with the program, and
when I view the page, it looks just like the demo - no changes are
showing.

I understand this may be a real simple question, however, this is the
first time I am trying to work with the program.

If it is the documentation, I must have missed it the three times I read
it. Any suggestions?
