I have found that if you login as minivend (or whatever you call your 
super-user), reconfigure the catalog, and log out, that rebuilds the 
products.gdbm files.  If you are having weirdness, make sure that your 
products.asc.category is a symlink.  If you copy things from one directory 
to another, you might have a real file there, and then minivend can't 
overwrite the file, and you get loads of weird things in searches :P
