I don't know about that catalog.html-thing,
but in your version, the main catalog-page is called index.html
and is located in ~/catalogs/yourcatalog/pages
In it, you'll also find an explanation about the __LEFTSIDE__ etc.
Don't forget to restart the server after having made a change to
such a file!
