Since you are already halfway there, you can just put this near the bottom 
of your basket.html page:

         [tag op=header interpolate=1]
                 Status: 302 moved
                 Location: [area href="ord/checkout"]
         [/tag]

This will automatically send the user to the checkout page, with the 
item(s) that was in the cart.

Of course, if you also need a basket that behaves normally, you will need 
to handle that as well.  Maybe you can pass an argument in the URL to tell 
the basket whether to go to the checkout page or not (some additional 
logic), or just have two baskets, one for "outside" links and one for in 
the catalog.
