[mv] Windows Status

****** message to minivend-users from Mike Heins <mikeh@minivend.com> ******

I know there are a few people who have been asking about when a Windows
version would get here. I had a couple hours to look at possibly making
MV available on Windows, and the verdict is....

...not nearly yet.

If I someday get a copy of Windows 2000 then I may try again. But
Win98 has too many gotchas in the areas of file locking, file close,
and module portability to even begin now. The elusive fork on Windows
will require Windows 2000, I can see that now.

I do have it running, but....

	1. Minimate will not work
	2. Various cookie problems on MSIE
	3. Must use DB_File based sessions
	4. What to do about makecat's executable selection?
	5. undoubtedly myriad other issues....

I can't even begin to think about releasing a version.

Once 4.04 is released, the intrepid among you may try the effect of "perl
Makefile.PL" on Win98. It should install, and may even run if you are
using Apache/Win98 and have all of the suggested modules installed. It
will not run MiniMate until Safe::Hole gets to be available for Windows.

I will work closely with anyone who decides to give a *real* port
a shot. In other words, a port that takes all of the support issues
I usually consider into account. (I am sure there are some among you
who think I never think about that, but nonetheless.) Those include
finding and requiring modules automatically, having makecat work (which
it mostly does), a README, etc. This port would be a *lot* of work, i.e.
it would take me a week's time I am guessing.

Regards,
