I completely disagree with one statement. You are putting for the
proposition that Minivend is great for stores that don't want to many
extras?

I think the argument being put forth (it MAY be easier to just PHP a
shopping cart system) can be valid, but not for the reason your suggseting.
It is far easier
to deliver complex actions and features in minivend that building it
completely from scratch in PHP. Minivend, by itself, supports almost any
operation and "feature"
a store could possibly want. At the same time, if your comfortable with perl
(a huge IF), it becomes trivial to really extend those features. That's what
makes minivend powerful, that you can use the embedded perl and logic
routines to build upon the already existing functionality.

A good example of this is a system I recently instituted that uses a custom
bit of perl to create a backend system that automatically tracks each
individual transaction in the order process through it's entire liftetime.
It is seamlessly integrated into minivend, which was a snap because I was
building on the minivend base.

To me, a persons success (or frusturation) with minivend depends LARGELY on
their ability to extend it with Perl. It's primary attribute is it's
incredible extensibility. If you really want a complex store with a variety
of features, you can accomplish this much faster building on the minivend
base rather than starting from scratch in PHP. However, if you want a
simpler store and don't want to get into the minivend learning curve, there
is nothing wrong with the PHP approach, and given the excellent logic design
of PHP it may even be a more suitable avenue for those wanting something
that doesn't truly take advantage of minivends power.
