You can thank Stefan Hornburg for that. He supplied the initiative

Actually, there is a better method. The current tracking facility
is compatible with Apache and ShopSuxess (search Yahoo) which
provide analysis far better than we can hope to provide initially.
The long-term goal is to break that out and use the best-of-breed
analysis tools.

I thought it would, though I hadn't strictly tried it. The core has not
changed much.
