You get this message, because you _have stop_ the server first.
You can

1) use su -c "/usr/local/minivend/bin/minivend" after shut down the
server or
2) su -c "/usr/local/minivend/bin/minivend -r" without shut down the
server

Check your catalog.cfg, SQL username and password.
