I don't have an answer to your problem, but I've successfully installed
MV 3.11 on Red Hat Linux release 5.2 (Apollo), Kernel 2.0.36 on an i586,
using the perl that came with RH5.2, no modifications or hacks.
Here's perl -V, if it's any help:
