The ONLY perl I have had work is the updated 5.004.??? on the Redhat site.
I am a C/C++ programmer so I don't know exactly what broke in the 5.005
that is floating around but I too spent days on this problem. I downgraded
to the official redhat perl and installed the first time with no problems.
