Isn't that a setting in the client IE browser, how to show a 404?  Something
stupid like "show friendly error page" if I recall.

I think you would not want to return status 404 in this case, so you
might not want ErrorDocument, unless you modify it not to return status
404.  Don't use IE to test it.  wget -S or some such.
