The reason you are seeing the description in the left_nav bar is that you 
didn't assign any categories in the Design menu.  The best way to do that 
is go into the design menu, and hit the auto-populate button.  It will 
give you the auto_populate page, which lets you designate what is the 
area and what is the category in the vertical category list.    Keep in 
mind, the default setup is to put the prod_group as the area, and the 
category as the sub-item of the prod_group, which isn't what most people 
want, they want it exactly opposite of that.

Also look for the awesome replacement for the auto_populate in the admin 
interface made by Mike, its in the mailing list somewhere just look for it
you'll find it.
