I run 3.12, which displays index.html by default when the catalog is
called, but I would assume the above would mean that if your catalog is
named "simple", the first page displayed would be simple.html

In 3.12 the page is actually called 'leftside' and it is located in the
pages/ subdir of the catalog. It the page is assigned to the variable
LEFTSIDE (referenced in catalog pages as __LEFTSIDE__) in the catalog.cfg
file, near the top.
