The minivend files and directories can be owned by *any* user/group,
but the key thing is they need to be consistent. There's three things
to check:
1. the owner and group of the files and dirs in <minivend-root>
2. the userid and group that you start minivend as
3. the owner and group of the vlink/tlink files (typically
renamed to myshop.cgi)
All three of the above must be the same. The vlink/tlink programs run
suid so that when called by the http server, they get the permissions
of the owner of the minivend files to allow communicating to the
main minivend program.
With that said, however, the vlink/tlink programs do not enter into the
problem Ed is having. At this phase in the startup sequence, it's
just trying to start the server. Permission problems with vlink/tlink
would show up later when you actually tried to access a pgae via the
web server.
Since the files/directories are all owned by user 'visprox', are you
running the minivend --start command as user visprox? My guess is,
you are, otherwise things would have failed earlier when trying to
create the pid file initially.
