Joachim,

  I can't answer your question directly but I can tell how I do it. :) 
As of Minivend 4.02 and FreeBSD 3.1

I think this is what works for me to install Minivend:

As root:
 perl Makefile.PL
 make 
 make test

as mvend:
 make install PREFIX=/usr/local
 /usr/local/mvend/bin/minivend --stop
 /usr/local/mvend/bin/minivend --start


Of course, 'mvend' is my minivend user, and /usr/local/mvend is where 
I want to install the software. 

If permissions and installations work differently on FreeBSD than
elsewhere, 
I'm interested to know why, too. :)
