Bill and Joachim -
I want to thank you both for all this great input and analysis. This
problem is steadily getting whittled down to it's core, thanks mainly to
your help.
I am forwarding all the latest to my technical contact at the ISP. Perhaps
the quickest solution would be Joachim's approach - have the ISP install
the server as root user in my clients directory, then chown all the files
and directories afterwards. I will post any follow up to the list benefit
of all.
